Combining fine motor skills with early literacy, this sight word creation project gives Pre-K learners a hands-on way to internalize one of the most useful words in English: “help.” Rather than drilling sight words through repetition alone, children decorate the word itself, transforming it from abstract letters into a personalized work of art.
The project works because it engages multiple learning pathways at once. Kids see the word, trace or write it, and then make creative decisions about how to embellish it. This repetition through play sticks better than worksheets alone. The decoupage element, where children cut and paste colorful paper, tissue, or magazine clippings onto the letters, keeps their hands busy while their brains absorb the spelling and shape of the word. For Pre-K students still developing pencil control, the cutting and pasting also strengthens the hand muscles they’ll need for writing.
To set up this activity, print the word “help” in large, bold letters on cardstock. Gather scraps of colored paper, old magazines, tissue paper, and glue sticks. Let children choose which materials appeal to them and cover the letters however they like. Some will create patterns, others will fill the space completely, and some might add drawings around the word itself.
The phonics connection matters too. While decorating, you can point out the individual sounds: the “h” sound at the start, the short “e,” the “l,” and the final “p.” This reinforces sound awareness alongside sight word recognition. If you’re working through other foundational phonics concepts, you might follow this project with activities like things that start with G to build broader letter-sound connections, or explore tracing letters Q through S to strengthen letter formation alongside sight word work.
Once finished, these decorated words make excellent classroom displays or take-home pieces that remind families of what their child is learning. The finished project becomes proof that literacy learning doesn’t have to feel like work.
